If you want a light and powerful bike but more maintenance, go for an enduro/motocross to supermoto conversion. Something like 250/300 2stroke or 450/500 4stroke. Ktm, husqvarna, husaberg, beta, fantic, yamaha (yz, yzf), sherco, tm. If you want a reliable but heavy bike then get a 690, 701, older te 500 husqvarnas or something like that.

In my opinion, the KTM 890 Adventure R and Yamaha Tenere 700 are currently the two best bikes for this type of riding, so this comparison was perfect to help me decide which bike is best for my current taste in ADV riding.
If your interests lean more dirt than pavement, between those two it's an easy vote for the 690. Both bikes will do gravel/dirt/fire roads and easy trails but the T7 is going to be more work carrying around additional 100 LBS wet as you go further from the tarmac.
